In Kerala alcoholism is a deep-rooted social problem eating into the vitals of our society, especially its social, economic, cultural, moral and spiritual facets. Convinced of the gravity of the problem which threatens to disrupt our social fabric, the Kerala Catholic Bishop’s Council (KCBC) set up an Anti-Alcoholic Commission on December 4, 1998. Responding to the call of the KCBC a unit of the KCBC Anti-alcoholic Organisation (Madya Viruddha Samiti) was established in the Archdiocese has a three-tiered organizational structure consisting of Archdiocesan, Forane and Parish units. With the rapid expansion and diversification of the activities, KCBC Madya Viruddha Samiti Unit of Verapoly Archdiocese has now been brought under the umbrella of THE FAMILY WELFARE CENTRE, Archdiocese of Verapoly, for
the reason that the main thrust of the Samiti’s activities are focused on the welfare of the family, which is to be achieved through the liberation of the members of the Archdiocese from the influence of alcoholism.
The Family Welfare Centre and the Madya Viruddha Samiti function under the patronage of His Grace Archbishop Joseph Kalathiparambil. The Archbishop appoints the Director of the Samiti. The Office bearers are elected as per the Constitution of the Samiti.
The Samiti has adopted the strategy of WHO in tackling the problem of alcohol and drug addiction. The WHO strategy focuses on Demand
Reduction, Supply Reduction and Risk Reduction. Demand Reduction involves awareness – building, which may eventually lead to a reduction in demand. Supply reduction includes efforts to reduce the availability ofliquor. Risk Reduction aims at weaning away addicts and helping them take their rightful place in the mainstream of society through programmmes for rehabilitation. The activities of the Samiti are planned and executed keeping the above objectives in view.
