Ernakulam Social Service Society, the official organization for social action, of the Archdiocese of Verapoly is the brain child of the first Indian to become Archbishop of Verapoly, Servant of God, Most. Rev. Dr. Joseph Attipetty and Fr. Jerome Payapilly OCD. It is the initiative of the Archdiocese of Verapoly to do community organisation and socio-economic programmes for the socially and economically disadvantaged sections of the area irrespective of caste, creed and religion, in districts of Ernakulam and Trichur. Founded on August 28, 1962, Ernakulam Social Service Society grew year by year under the patronage of gifted Archbishops and directors with dedication and commitment. ESSS has been registered under the Travancore Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Regn. Act XIII of 1955 in 1962 (Reg. No. ER- 8/1962).
In this journey ESSS has taken sides with the poor and the marginalized people to end poverty and social injustice. Our focus is on the rights of the most marginalized communities: rural and urban poor, women, children, aged, fishermen, differently abled, migrant and unorganized workers. These groups face an acute lack of access to and control over resources, services, and institutions. ESSS practices a right-based approach to development, helping people to claim their rights, which may be constitutional, moral or legal entitlements.

History
Ernakulam Social Service Society (ESSS) came into existence on August 28, 1962 to cater the development concern of the poor and the marginalized population in the coastal belt of Ernakulam and Trichur Districts. It was the initiative of the Archdiocese of Verapoly, the Catholic Hierarchy of the Church of Kerala. Archdiocese of Verapoly hails its origin from the Vicariate of Malabar in 1659 and has been instrumental for many social changes in religious and secular arena. Archdiocese of Verapoly has been in the forefront to establish and conduct institutions in the educational as well as in the health sectors and wanted to establish Ernakulam Social Service Society (ESSS) solely to perform community organization and socio-economic programmes for the socially and economically disadvanged sections fo the area irrespective of caste, creed and religion. Presently it is operating in 1500 sq. Kms comprising a population of 25 million.
It Collaborates with different state level and central level Government departments with a mission to serve the cause of the poor and the
disadvantaged.

Promotion of functional community based organizations at the villages for the development action. Creating village level micro credit institutions to replace the money lenders and to improve the financial services for self reliance.
Entrepreneurship development and employment generation through locally viable and eco friendly micro enterprise.
Community Based Disaster Preparedness and Management equipping forums and task forces as appropriate and developing bio
physical shields to mitigate the disasters.
Legal literacy and redressal services targetting specifically women issues and in that regard collaborates with constitutional mechanisms and safe guards.
