Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Chathiath, Kochi, is a historic landmark and one of the first parish founded by Carmelite Missionaries in India. Established in 1673. Built in the cross-shaped Corinthian style, the structure was crafted using traditional red stone and lime mortar without modern machinery. The church holds unique historical significance as it was permitted by Dutch Governor Hendrik Van Rheede in gratitude for Fr. Matheus’s contributions to the landmark botanical work Hortus Malabaricus. Today, the church is a vibrant spiritual center celebrating over 350 years of heritage, offering a serene lakeside atmosphere near Queen’s Way.
