Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Venduruthy is one of the most venerable landmarks within the Archdiocese of Verapoly, boasting a legacy that traces back to 1400. Originally a sacred space for the native Christian community, the church took its formal identity with the arrival of Portuguese missionaries in 1599 and was later rebuilt in its current neoclassical form in 1788 by Luka Padri and Mikhael Kapithan. Nestled within the strategic Venduruthy Island, now part of the Indian Navy’s Southern Naval Command, the church remains a “living museum” of Kochi’s heritage. A landmark 2020 conservation project led by Fr. Alphonse Panakkal and the PAMA research collective successfully restored its traditional architecture, uncovering ancient artifacts and medieval tiles that highlight centuries of continuous worship. Today, the parish continues to serve as a serene spiritual home for about 140 families, preserving the rich history of the Latin Catholic community.
