National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom, Vallarpadam
Vallarpadom Basilica, officially known as the Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom, traces its origins to the early 16th century. The devotion was introduced by Portuguese missionaries, who brought the sacred image of Our Lady of Ransom to Vallarpadom around 1524. After a devastating flood in 1676 destroyed the original church, the miraculous image was recovered and enshrined at Vallarpadom, where a new church was built in 1676. Over the centuries, the shrine emerged as a major pilgrimage centre of the Archdiocese of Verapoly. Recognizing its historical and spiritual importance, 2004, 1st December St. Pope John Paul II Elevated this National Shrine to the status of a Basilica.
